Speaker’s Corner: Featuring Stephan Morais, Founder & Managing General Partner at Indico Capital Partners

Tell me about Indico Capital Partners, its work, and projects…

We are an early-stage VC fund based out of Lisbon investing from 100k to 5M in startups based in Portugal and Spain.

What are the challenges within the venture capital & private equity industry today?

Valuations are now too high in many geographies and retaining talent in the portfolio is not easy either, but Portugal is not as affected as other countries. Fundraising for funds in Europe is still fairly challenging even with a great track record.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way you go about business? What trends do you see for the future…

Well, it accelerated the digital transition so for us it was generally positive from an investment perspective. The human tragedy was obviously huge.

What’s the USP for Indico Capital Partners?

There were no independent sizeable VCs in Portugal at the time and the market was already producing great startups.

What is your biggest objective as a speaker?

Sharing our views and increasing our brand as top of mind for entrepreneurs and investors.

Could you share with us the points of discussion (the input that you provided) during the panel(s) at Web Summit 2021?

The panels I participated in were mostly about how to grow an ecosystem. One other panel was about ethics and governance in the tech world, this is a huge problem the industry is not tackling and that we take very seriously at Indico.

As a leader, what are the factors both professional and personal that drive you? What keeps you going?

Doing the things I like and know how to do at work, with people I enjoy working with and learning with. Personally being with the family, my kids as much as possible, enjoying nature with them, surfing. Life is short.

In your opinion, do digital events give you a similar level of feedback/result vis-à-vis the live versions? What would you say were the biggest pros and cons of both formats? Which do you prefer?

The only advantage I can see in digital events is that you are able to work while you are attending, but that means that it is not very engaging. Digital is good for avoiding unnecessary trips for meetings.

What is your take on in-person events? Do you prefer in-person events as compared to hybrid or virtual? How soon do you think in-person events would return?

People want to be with people if the event is interesting. For short meetings digital is better for sure.

In your opinion, what are the top 3 challenges to returning to ‘In-Person’ events? How could we mitigate risks?

Challenges are the Covid scare, the costs involved and the time wasted in traveling – all became more real and so people will be more demanding in terms of which events they actually will travel to.

Eventible has recently launched a B2B Interactive in Person Event Tracker – the tracker shows you in-person events going live in various parts of the world. Do you think this is useful?

Sounds interesting indeed.

Eventible.com is a review platform catering to B2B events. Given how review-driven our lives have become today, do you think reviews will bring in a level of transparency to the events industry? Would you rely on event reviews from other speakers if you had to make a speaking decision?

It certainly helps.

Finally, do you have a favorite mocktail or drink? We’d be delighted to know.

Gin and tonic.
